Foundation Shade Finder

Answer 3 quick questions to find your skin undertone and shade family.

Question 1 of 3

What colour are the veins on the inside of your wrist?

For entertainment and general guidance only. Always test foundation on your jawline in natural light.

About this tool

Buying foundation online is hard because the shade depends on two things most charts ignore: your depth (how light or deep your skin is) and your undertone (warm, cool or neutral). This finder works out both from three quick questions so you can shop the right shade family with confidence.

How the shade finder works

You answer three questions: how your skin reacts to the sun, the colour of the veins on your wrist, and which jewellery tone flatters you most. Together these reliably reveal your undertone, and combined with your depth they point you to the shade family that will match rather than turn grey, orange or pink on your skin.

The result describes your undertone and depth in the language brands actually use on their shade names, so you can translate it to almost any foundation range.

Why undertone matters more than depth

Two people with the same depth can need completely different foundations because one is warm and the other cool. A foundation that is the right darkness but the wrong undertone is the single most common reason a base looks ashy or mask-like. Getting undertone right is what makes a foundation disappear into the skin.

Once you know your undertone you can shortcut the guesswork on every future purchase, including concealer, powder and even clothing and hair colour.

How to confirm a foundation match

Treat the result as a shortlist, then swatch two or three nearby shades along your jaw rather than on your hand. The right match should blend into both your face and neck in natural daylight. Leave the swatches for ten to fifteen minutes before deciding, because some foundations oxidise and become darker or warmer after they dry.

Choose the formula as carefully as the colour. A matte base can exaggerate dryness even when the shade is right, while a very luminous base may not last on oily skin. If your face and neck differ in depth, match the area you want the finished look to blend into and use bronzer or concealer for dimension instead of choosing a foundation that is visibly too light or too dark.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my skin undertone?

Check whether the veins on your wrist look more green (warm), more blue or purple (cool), or a mix (neutral), and whether gold or silver jewellery flatters you more. The shade finder combines these signals for you.

What is the difference between undertone and skin tone?

Skin tone (or depth) is how light or deep your skin is. Undertone is the subtle warm, cool, or neutral hue underneath. You need both to match foundation correctly.

Will this match me to a specific product?

It identifies your undertone and depth — the shade family — which you can then map to any brand’s range, since shade names differ between brands.

Is the shade finder free?

Yes, it is free and requires no sign-up.

Can my undertone change?

Undertone stays consistent, but your depth can change with sun exposure across the year, so you may need a slightly lighter shade in winter and deeper in summer.
