The fertility awareness method (FAM) uses your body’s natural signs to identify when you’re fertile. It can be used to plan or avoid pregnancy, and it’s hormone-free — but it requires consistent, careful tracking to be effective.
The signs you track
- Cervical mucus: becomes clear and stretchy near ovulation
- Basal body temperature (BBT): rises slightly after ovulation
- Cycle length and patterns over time
How effective is it?
With perfect, consistent use, fertility awareness can be quite effective; with typical use, it’s less so because it depends entirely on accurate daily tracking and interpreting signs correctly. It offers no protection against STIs.
Is it right for you?
FAM suits people who want a hormone-free approach and are willing to track diligently every day. If you’re using it to avoid pregnancy, consider learning from a trained instructor. To understand the underlying biology, read our menstrual cycle and fertility guides.
