Luteal phase
The second half of the cycle, after ovulation, when progesterone rises to support a possible pregnancy.
After ovulation, the empty follicle becomes the corpus luteum and releases progesterone, which maintains the uterine lining. If pregnancy does not occur, progesterone falls and the period begins.
The luteal phase is when premenstrual symptoms (PMS/PMDD) typically occur.
